8 Warning Signs Your Brake Discs Need Replacing

How to tell if your brake discs are worn, what each symptom means, and how urgently you need to act. Each sign includes a clear urgency rating.

1.Visible lip around the disc edge

Book within a month

Look through your wheel spokes at the disc edge. A healthy disc has a smooth, flat edge. A worn disc develops a raised lip around the outside where the pad does not reach. If the lip is more than 1-2mm, the disc centre has worn significantly and replacement is approaching. You can feel this with your finger if you reach behind the wheel.

2.Deep scoring or grooves on the disc face

Book within a month

Light, fine lines on the disc surface are normal. Deep grooves you can catch your fingernail in are not. Deep scoring means debris has been trapped between the pad and disc, or the pads wore down to the metal backing plate and ground into the disc surface. New pads on a deeply scored disc will never bed in properly.

3.Vibration or pulsation when braking

Book this week

If the brake pedal pulsates or the steering wheel vibrates when you press the brakes, your discs are likely warped. Heat causes the disc to distort slightly, creating a high spot that pushes the pad back with each rotation. This is most noticeable at motorway speeds. It gets worse over time and increases stopping distances. Note: wheel bearing issues can cause similar symptoms, so get it diagnosed properly.

4.Grinding noise when braking

Dangerous - do not drive

A harsh, metallic grinding noise means the brake pads are completely gone and the metal backing plate is grinding directly against the disc. At this point both pads and discs need replacing. Every mile you drive is causing further damage to the disc, potentially damaging the caliper, and significantly increasing your stopping distance. Do not drive the car. Have it recovered to a garage.

5.Squealing or squeaking when braking

Book this week

Most brake pads have a small metal tab called a wear indicator. When the pad wears down far enough, this tab touches the disc and produces a high-pitched squeal. This is an intentional early warning system. At this stage, pads definitely need replacing and the discs should be inspected. If ignored, the squealing turns to grinding within a few thousand miles.

6.Longer stopping distances

Book within a month

This one is gradual and easy to miss. If the car seems to take slightly longer to stop than it used to, or you find yourself pressing the pedal harder, the brakes may be worn. Thin discs have less thermal mass and fade more quickly under repeated braking. Combined with worn pads, stopping distances can increase by 20-30% without the driver noticing until an emergency stop.

7.Dashboard brake warning light

Book this week

Many cars built after 2010-2015 have electronic pad wear sensors embedded in the brake pads. When the pad wears down to a set thickness, the sensor wire is exposed and triggers a dashboard warning. This means pads need immediate attention. When pads are this worn, the discs should always be inspected too. On some cars, the warning light indicates low brake fluid, which can also signal worn pads (as pads thin, caliper pistons extend further, drawing more fluid).

8.Car pulling to one side when braking

Book this week

If the car veers left or right when you brake, one side is producing more braking force than the other. Common causes include a seized caliper (the caliper on one side is not squeezing properly), uneven disc wear, or a contaminated pad. This is a safety issue because the car is unpredictable in an emergency stop. Get it inspected immediately.
